If you’re considering starting a business in Network Marketing but haven’t jumped in yet, then you may be wondering “is Network Marketing for me?” But how can you know if you’ve never been in the industry before? That’s where we can help. First, we’ll explain what Network Marketing is, and then ask some simple questions to determine if it’s something for you.
What is Network Marketing?
Network Marketing is a business model in which a person (known as a distributor or representative) can build an income from their efforts, and the efforts of a team. Usually a distributor sells products from a Network Marketing company, and attains partners to join them in the business, and receives compensation for all of this.
Network Marketing is also known as Direct Selling, or Multi-level Marketing (MLM).
When you’re looking to start any work-at-home business you want to make sure it’s the right fit. If you’re deciding on the question – is Network Marketing for me – as yourself these questions.
Do you have the desire?
In other words, work on your WHY. Why do you want to start this business in the first place?
Is it because you really love the products and services? Do you use them already and have noticed a difference in your life, or can you simply not live without them?
Or maybe it’s because you have financial goals that you want to
Do you have the time?
Like anything, your new business will take some time. Too many people join Network Marketing thinking it’s this “get rich quick” kind of thing and that couldn’t be further from the truth. The fact is that if you don’t have time to devote to your business, it will fail.
Many times people will join a Network Marketing opportunity, talk with only a small handful of people and then decide it’s a failure and give up. That’s like getting a gym membership, working out a few times, deciding that you didn’t lose weight so you’re going to quit. It’s crazy!
Be committed to your business and set aside time to learn the ropes and implement them daily. There is no business out there that requires zero to minimal time to make money and if someone else is telling you that, then run because they are downright lying. The truth is that every company is different, but you should anticipate spending at least 20-hours a week with your new business if you want to achieve success and then more or less depending on your goals. Then talk with your family about how much time you’re going to devote to the business – especially in those first few months.
Is your family on board?
In the first few months of business, if you are serious about actually earning an income then it will take some time. It’s like getting a plane off the ground. Initially it takes a lot of momentum, and a lot of things happening to get lift-off. As we discussed in the previous point, you may find yourself extremely busy in your first 6-months to a year. This may mean certain things you do need to shift to another family member or members so that you can work. For example your husband, or kids if they are of age, may need to pick up a load or two each week. Are they ok with you potentially missing a few weekends here and there so you can work?
If your family is on board with your decision, that makes life easier. It removes that unnecessary stress for you and your entire family and allows you to focus.
Do you have the mindset?
Entrepreneur and thought-leader Tony Robbins says success is “…80 percent psychology and 20 percent skills.” He explains that the psychological aspect is dependent on how much you grow, improve, and push yourself beyond what you thought was possible.
If you start your business with the idea and notion that you are going to fail, then guess what, you will fail. But if you have the mindset that you are going to succeed then you will. Henry Ford once said “whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.”
You will face rejection in Network Marketing. You will have bad days in business. But are you ready to push through to get to the other side and find success?
Do you like meeting & talking with people
After all this is “network” marketing. That means you actually need to network and connect with real live people. If you enjoy talking with people, and especially if you enjoy solving people’s problems then you will do very well! That’s what Network Marketing is all about – solving people’s problems with your product or opportunity when it’s a right fit.
If that freaks you out, or you consider yourself to be “shy” don’t worry, all is not lost. You can learn to like meeting and talking with people – you just have to be open to the experience (which means have a good mindset, see the previous bullet).
